Mindful Decision-Making & Change
By Michelle Reugebrink-MCC; NBC-HWC, EMCC, ESIA, EIA
What if I told you that the way you make decisions is more important than the decisions themselves? How often do you second-guess your choices? What would change if you trusted yourself more?
The invitation here is to bring awareness to what is within our control today—one small action that supports the change we're moving through. This practice helps us meet change with curiosity instead of fear, reinforcing the idea that adaptation is strength.
Ellen Langer famously said, "Don't try to make the right decision, make the decision right." This mindset has profoundly shaped my coaching, and here's why...
Langer's perspective on decision-making is deeply empowering. It shifts the focus from the impossible pursuit of perfectionism to the impactful realm of personal agency. In my coaching, I consistently emphasize that once a decision is made, your energy is best spent shaping it into something meaningful rather than getting stuck in second-guessing whether it was "right" or "wrong."
This mindset empowers us to move forward with confidence and mindfulness, rather than becoming mired in hesitation or regret. Decisions are rarely perfect in the moment they're made. However, by approaching them with intentionality, adaptability, and presence, we can actively create the outcomes we desire.
I integrate this philosophy into all my coaching. It allows each client to trust their choices, refine their paths, and ultimately turn any decision into an opportunity for growth. Langer’s words are a powerful reminder: clarity isn’t about eliminating uncertainty—it’s about owning our choices and making them work for us.
