Role Overview
As our Fractional Director of Quality Assurance (QA), you will be the champion and builder of quality for the Dancing Dragons platform. You will establish our entire QA strategy, processes, and standards from the ground up, ensuring our clients and coaches have a reliable, bug-free, and delightful experience. This role involves defining testing methodologies (manual and automated), selecting tools, potentially performing initial hands-on testing, and setting the foundation for a scalable QA function. You will collaborate closely with the CTO, CPO, and development resources to embed quality throughout the development lifecycle. This fractional leadership role (3-10 hours per week) requires a blend of strategic thinking and practical execution, reporting likely to the CTO. It's a unique opportunity for an experienced QA leader to make a foundational impact, define quality for a mission-driven startup, with compensation leaning towards equity.
Key Responsibilities
QA Strategy & Process Definition
- Develop and implement the overall QA strategy and roadmap for the platform
- Define and document testing processes, standards, and best practices (e.g., test planning, case design, execution, reporting)
- Select and implement appropriate tools for test management, bug tracking, and potentially automation
- Establish quality metrics and reporting mechanisms to track product quality and QA effectiveness
- Define the strategy for integrating different types of testing (functional, usability, performance, security, regression) into the SDLC
Testing Execution & Oversight
- Plan, coordinate, and potentially execute testing activities for new features and releases
- Develop and maintain comprehensive test plans and test cases
- Triage, prioritize, and track defects throughout their lifecycle
- Oversee any future QA resources (internal or external) as the team grows
- Analyze test results and provide clear quality assessments to stakeholders
Quality Advocacy & Collaboration
- Champion a culture of quality across the engineering and product teams
- Collaborate closely with developers and product managers to ensure testability and clear requirements
- Provide timely feedback on product quality and potential risks during development
- Advocate for the user experience from a quality and reliability perspective
- Facilitate effective communication regarding quality issues and resolutions
Automation Strategy
- Define the long-term strategy for test automation
- Evaluate and recommend automation frameworks and tools
- Identify key areas for automation to improve efficiency and coverage
- Potentially contribute to or oversee the initial setup of automation frameworks
Qualifications
Required
- 7+ years of experience in software Quality Assurance, including testing web applications
- 3+ years in a QA leadership or management role, setting strategy and leading teams/initiatives
- Proven experience establishing QA processes, methodologies, and tooling from scratch
- Strong understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies
- Expertise in various testing types (e.g., functional, regression, integration, API, usability)
- Experience with test management and bug tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, TestRail, Zephyr)
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and drive initiatives in a startup environment
Preferred
- Experience with test automation frameworks and tools (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, Playwright)
- Experience testing marketplace platforms or consumer-facing applications
- Familiarity with performance and/or security testing concepts and tools
- Experience in health-tech, wellness, or ed-tech industries
- Experience managing contract or remote QA resources
- Relevant certifications (e.g., ISTQB) are a plus
