Role Overview
As our Fractional Chief Technology Officer (CTO), you will be the architect of our technological future. You'll define the overall technology vision, strategy, and architecture, ensuring our platform is scalable, secure, and robust. You will guide our technical decisions, oversee development efforts (potentially managing external contractors or early hires), and ensure our technology stack supports our mission and business goals. This is a critical executive leadership role reporting directly to the CEO, collaborating closely with the COO, CPO, VP of Experience, and other leaders. The fractional nature (3-10 hours per week) offers flexibility while providing a unique opportunity to establish the technological foundation of an innovative, early-stage company poised for growth. We're seeking a seasoned, strategic, and pragmatic technology leader comfortable with both high-level planning and hands-on guidance when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Technology Strategy & Vision
- Develop and articulate the company's long-term technology strategy and roadmap
- Define the core architecture and select appropriate technologies for scalability and maintainability
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and assess their applicability to our platform
- Ensure technology choices align with business objectives, user experience goals, and budget constraints
- Champion technical innovation and best practices within the organization
Platform Development & Architecture
- Oversee the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of the platform
- Establish coding standards, development processes, and quality guidelines
- Ensure platform performance, reliability, security, and scalability meet current and future needs
- Guide decisions on build vs. buy for various technology components
- Potentially manage and mentor development resources (contractors or future hires)
Security & Compliance
- Establish and oversee the company's technical security strategy and practices
- Ensure compliance with relevant data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) in collaboration with legal counsel
- Implement best practices for data protection and infrastructure security
- Develop disaster recovery and business continuity plans
Leadership & Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with the CPO and VP of Experience to translate product and user requirements into technical solutions
- Advise the CEO and leadership team on all technology-related matters
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Qualifications
Required
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, architecture, and technology leadership
- 5+ years in senior leadership roles (e.g., Head of Engineering, VP Engineering, CTO)
- Proven track record of designing, building, and scaling complex web applications and platforms
- Deep understanding of modern web technologies, cloud infrastructure (e.g., Vercel, AWS, GCP, Azure), databases, and APIs
- Strong grasp of software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum, etc.)
- Experience with defining and implementing security best practices
- Excellent strategic thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, early-stage startup environment
Preferred
- Experience in marketplace platforms, health-tech, wellness, or ed-tech
- Experience scaling a technology organization from the ground up
- Familiarity with AI/ML applications in personalization or matching
- Hands-on experience with relevant tech stacks (e.g., Next.js, Node.js, Python, PostgreSQL/MongoDB)
- Experience managing remote or distributed development teams/contractors
- Understanding of data privacy regulations relevant to coaching/health platforms
