Role Overview
As our Fractional Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), you will provide strategic human resources leadership and oversee our people operations. This flexible role requires minimal time commitment (5-10 hours per week) while offering you the opportunity to shape the people foundation of an innovative startup in the personal development space. You'll work directly with the CEO and leadership team to establish HR systems, develop talent strategies, ensure compliance, and build a culture that attracts and retains top talent. This position is ideal for an experienced HR professional with strong people operations expertise who is looking to diversify their portfolio with an equity-based opportunity in a promising early-stage company.
Key Responsibilities
HR Strategy & Planning
- Develop and implement HR strategies that support our business objectives and growth plans
- Create and maintain HR policies, procedures, and employee handbooks appropriate for an early-stage company
- Establish HR metrics and KPIs to measure people operations effectiveness and guide decision-making
- Advise leadership on people-related implications of business decisions and strategic initiatives
- Support organizational design and structure as the company scales
- Develop employer branding strategies to attract top talent
Talent Acquisition & Recruitment
- Design and implement talent acquisition strategies and processes for hiring across all functions
- Establish recruitment workflows, interview processes, and candidate evaluation frameworks
- Build relationships with recruitment partners, agencies, and talent networks
- Develop onboarding programs that ensure new hires are set up for success
- Create job descriptions and compensation structures that attract qualified candidates
- Implement diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in hiring practices
Employee Relations & Performance
- Oversee employee relations, including conflict resolution and workplace issues
- Develop and implement performance management systems and processes
- Create employee development programs and career pathing frameworks
- Establish feedback mechanisms and employee engagement initiatives
- Manage employee communications and ensure clear, transparent information sharing
- Support leadership in building a positive, inclusive company culture
Compensation & Benefits
- Develop compensation structures and salary bands appropriate for an early-stage company
- Design benefits packages that are competitive yet sustainable for a startup
- Advise on equity compensation plans and implementation
- Create scalable compensation frameworks that can grow with the company
- Benchmark compensation against market rates and industry standards
Compliance & Legal
- Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations at federal, state, and local levels
- Manage employment contracts, offer letters, and separation agreements
- Oversee HRIS systems and maintain accurate employee records
- Develop and implement workplace safety and security policies
- Manage relationships with employment attorneys and legal advisors
- Ensure proper classification of employees vs. contractors
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field; SHRM or HRCI certification preferred
- 7+ years of HR experience, with at least 3 years in HR leadership roles
- Strong background in talent management, recruitment, and employee relations
- Experience with HRIS systems and HR technology platforms
- Knowledge of employment law, compliance, and best practices
- Understanding of startup culture and scaling people operations
- Experience working with early-stage companies and limited resources
- Comfort with a lightweight, advisory role with flexible time commitment
Preferred
- Experience in the coaching, wellness, tech, or personal development industries
- Background with remote teams and distributed workforces
- Knowledge of equity compensation structures and startup financing
- Experience building HR functions from the ground up
- Understanding of contractor management and 1099 compliance
- Previous fractional CHRO roles or HR consulting experience
