Role Overview
As our Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will provide strategic financial leadership and oversee our accounting and payroll operations. This flexible role requires minimal time commitment (5-10 hours per week) while offering you the opportunity to shape the financial foundation of an innovative startup in the personal development space. You'll work directly with the CEO and leadership team to establish financial systems, ensure compliance, and guide financial decision-making. This position is ideal for an experienced finance professional with strong accounting and payroll expertise who is looking to diversify their portfolio with an equity-based opportunity in a promising early-stage company.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Planning
- Develop and implement financial strategies that support our business objectives and growth plans
- Create and maintain financial models to forecast growth, cash flow, and capital requirements
- Establish KPIs and financial metrics to measure business performance and guide decision-making
- Advise leadership on financial implications of business decisions and strategic initiatives
- Support fundraising efforts by preparing financial documentation and participating in investor discussions
- Develop pricing strategies and revenue models for our coaching platform
Accounting & Reporting
- Establish and oversee accounting systems and processes appropriate for an early-stage company
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and analysis
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes
- Prepare and review financial statements and management reports
- Implement internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure data integrity
- Manage relationships with external accounting partners and tax professionals
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations
Payroll & Compensation
- Oversee accounts payable to contractors and payment systems for coaches
- Develop and implement compensation structures for platform coaches and contractors
- Ensure compliance with contractor payment regulations and tax reporting requirements
- Establish efficient systems for managing variable compensation components
- Advise on equity compensation plans and implementation
- Create scalable payment solutions that can grow with the company
Operational Finance
- Manage cash flow and banking relationships
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
- Implement efficient payment processing systems for the platform
- Develop financial policies and procedures
- Manage insurance coverage and risk mitigation strategies
- Support contract negotiations with vendors and partners from a financial perspective
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; CPA or MBA preferred
- 7+ years of finance experience, with at least 3 years in financial leadership roles
- Strong accounting background with hands-on experience managing accounting functions
- Experience with payroll systems and processes, including contractor payments
- Knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting
- Understanding of SaaS, marketplace, or subscription business models
- Experience working with early-stage companies and limited resources
- Comfort with a lightweight, advisory role with flexible time commitment
Preferred
- Experience in the coaching, wellness, tech, or personal development industries
- Background with digital platforms or marketplace models
- Knowledge of equity compensation structures and startup financing
- Experience with payment processing systems and financial technology
- Understanding of contractor payment regulations and 1099 reporting
- Previous fractional CFO roles or financial consulting experience
