I built and managed teams for almost 20 years in the medical devices space and had lower turnover rates than any other department year over year, keeping one team with all of its original members for 10 years. As a leader, I focused heavily on recognition, appreciation, and empathy, and I believe those were the critical elements to my success. My coaching style is relaxed, relatable, and empathetic with an emphasis on accountability.
Empathetic leaders who ensure their teams are recognized for their efforts and choose to focus on their team more than themselves have the greatest success. It is easy to focus on your own goals and objectives and forget to "see" your people and what they are doing. This is a common trap leaders fall into.
